    Goals / Remit

Zero Waste Europe (ZWE) is the European network of communities, local leaders, experts, and change agents working towards the prevention and elimination of waste in our society. We advocate for sustainable systems; for the redesign of our relationship with resources; and for a global shift towards environmental justice, accelerating a just transition towards zero waste for the benefit of people and the planet.

ZWE is participating in the international organisation Global Alliance for Incinerator Alternatives (GAIA) and the Zero Waste International Alliance (ZWIA).

    Main EU files targeted

Our work at the EU level focuses on making the bridge between zero waste practices at the local level and its transposition to EU wide legislation. We foster the transition to a zero waste Europe by creating the enabling conditions in terms of policy; regulations; financial drivers; implementing zero waste solutions on the ground; and organising and mobilising other groups inside and outside the organisation, initiating coalitions to further promote our narrative.

ZWE is involved in the transposition of waste directives, including waste package (waste framework directive, the Landfill directive, ecodesign) and single-use plastics legislation (such as the revision of the Packaging and Packaging Waste Directive and the Sustainable Products initiative) but also product, energy and toxics & health policies (FCM regulation, Chemicals Strategy for Sustainability). ZWE is also working on climate policies such as EU 2050 climate strategy, Renewable Energy Directive, EU Emissions Trading Scheme (EU ETS) and EU Sustainable Finance Taxonomies. ZWE works on other issues as a member of the international network GAIA but these activities don't fall under the register.

    Communication activities

In 2022, we took steps to better understand our current audiences and, subsequently, provide content and messaging that is more tailored with their needs and expectations. As a result, we submitted an Audience Survey and revised our Comms Media strategy.

    In 2022, ZWE released:
    - 13 reports (#GetBack: Making Europe transition to reusable packaging, How Circulas is Glass)
    - 7 policy briefings (Packaging reuse vs. Packaging Prevention, A New Look for the Fashion Industry – EU Textile Strategy and the crucial role of Extended Producer Responsibility, Ensuring safe recycled content in food packaging: ambition vs reality)
    - 33 blog posts
    - 16 press releases
    - 2 factsheets
    - 2 policy papers (Joint paper: recommendations on waste prevention targets, Revision of the Waste Framework Directive – How to revise EU legislation to align with the political ambition and commitment of the European Green Deal)

Impact was also reached through our major campaigns: Q1 - The True Toxic Toll - biomonitoring of incineration emissions, Q2-Q3 - #GetBack - Making reuse the norm across Europe again, Q4 - Waste Framework Directive. Part of our movement-building pillar, the ZWE Changemakers campaign has been bringing our members and their national/local achievements closer to our audiences.

ZWE's presence in the media was strengthened and solidified as this was the first year when our press approach was on equal parts reactive and proactive (due to capacity, only the former was possible before). We had more opportunities for interviews in both written and audio/visual media, more pitches for op-eds, and more features as part of big investigative new pieces. In 2022 ZWE registered 1479 press mentions.

During 2022 we hosted 11 webinars on several key ZWE working topics - from biomonitoring of incineration emissions, to the transition to reuse, to toxic-free packaging and the consequences of energy crisis for zero waste. Our webinars proved to be a huge success in 2022 with very high levels of registration and participation (some going over 150 participants at a time) A total of 775 attendees across the year.
