De Vlaamse Interuniversitaire Raad (VLIR) werd in 1976 opgericht als een instelling van openbaar nut. De VLIR is een autonoom overlegorgaan, gefinancierd door de universiteiten.
De VLIR heeft tot doel de dialoog en samenwerking tussen de Vlaamse universiteiten te bevorderen. In de schoot van de VLIR bereiden de universitaire vertegenwoordigers gemeenschappelijke standpunten voor in een reeks van domeinen gerelateerd aan de basisopdrachten en het beheer van hun instellingen.
