Goals / Remit
EDbN Goals:
-To take action to achieve the recognition of deafblindness as a unique disability on all political and administrative levels throughout Europe.
-To improve the situation of deafblind people in Europe with the objective of achieving their equal rights and full participation in society.
-To be a European forum for the exchange of knowledge and experience in the area of deafblindness.
-To represent and support deafblind people and their families to have a better quality of life. This includes representing deafblind people who cannot speak for themselves.
In order to achieve EDbN aims, its main funcion is to campaing at all political and administrative levels in Europe, through the following actions:
-Supporting members of EDbN with campaigning to achieve the recognition of deafblindness in their own countries.
-Organising email networks to enable to the sharing of knowledge and information in area of deafblindness throughout Europe.
-Collecting and distributing information about the situation of deafblind people in Europe to support the campaigning aims of EDbN.
-Establishing and maintaining relationships with the European Union (Parliament, Commission and Council); with the national councils of people with disabilities; with European non-governmental organisations of people with disabilities; with the institutions of the United Nations; with international organisations in Europe and with the regional offices of the international organisations whose aims are in accordance with those of EDbN and its members.Main EU files targeted

EDbN is an umbrella organization that represent the interest of many European Deafblind organizations, which provide sources for any different project where EDbN is involved. In this regard, EDbN has not an own budget.
The "EuropeanDeafblindIndicators.eu" project was chaired by APSOCECAT with other EDbN members. -

Grundtvig Project "European Deafblind Indicators.eu"Other activities
From mid-2014 and until March 2015, the main activities of EDbN met with 60 MEPs informing them about the results of the “European Deafblind Indicators” project. This project determines the situations of the deafblind people in Europe and is the first survey at this level. With the same idea EDbN met with vice-president of the EP Social Affairs Commission. As a result of this meetings, a number of these MEPs decide to support EDbN in order to ask for specific support to the European Commission. A meeting with Commissioner Thyssen was held and 2 contact persons were established in order to continue.
Until 2014, as part of it activities directed to the formulation or implementation of policy and the decision-making processes of the EU institutions, EDbN has formulated the following three questions to three different Members of the European Parliament:
-Eurostat office does not include specific statistics regarding disability or deafblindness in its public, and this is unhelpful for the formulation of social policies in these areas. Disability does not figure prominently in any Eurostat studies and in the few that refer indirectly to disability, there is no mention of contact with expert non-governmental organisations (…)
-Most of the Member States of EU do not have an official census of Deafblind people. In spite of the fact that 40 out of every 100 000 Europeans are Deafblind, only Denmark has a complete official census. The lack of a census condemns this group to invisibility and therefore to discrimination (…)
-The United States Federal Communications Commission (FCC) receives more than USD 10 million annually from the federal government in order to fund accessibility material for Deafblind people in who lack economic resources. Creating an equivalent line in the EU budget would not only greatly assist the many Deafblind people in the EU but also boost the accessibility material industry in the European Union (…)
EDbN will continue working in direction with the objective of improfing the situation of deafblind people in Europe, improving their qulity of life and achieving their equal rights and full participation in society.
