    Goals / Remit

The International Human Rights Network Europe (Ridhe) is an international NGO constituted and recognized by the Belgian State as an International Non-Profit Association (AISBL). RIDHE is also a network of European and Latin American organizations united in their commitments to protecting and promoting human rights through capacity-building skills in analysis and training. These strategies are envisioned as an efficient tool to assure successful participation in forums and public debates aimed at reinforcing strategic advocacy and lobbying mechanisms towards European Institutions and the United Nations.

Headquartered in Geneva (Switzerland) and Brussels, (Belgium), RIDH-RIDHE supports NGOs, coalitions, platforms, human rights defenders, and communities that have been victims of coordinated and systematic human rights violations. We aim to promote initiatives capable of ensuring proper implementation of human rights and international legal standards for peace and development.

    Main EU files targeted

    - Theoretical and practical training mainly addressed to human rights defenders, civil society organizations, and journalists on different complaint procedures under the United Nations and in the European Union, whether these mechanisms are strictly legal or mainly diplomatic.

    - Developing and implementing human rights advocacy strategies by enhancing articulation between Latin American civil society organizations and the respective European strategic actors. To fulfill this mission, RIDHE is integrated into the EU transparency register and enjoys consultative status before the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC).

    - Furthermore, RIDHE has been establishing strategic partnerships to reinvigorate its advocacy strategies, inserting itself into platforms such as ESC.Net, based in New York, or allying itself with the global Campaign (Dismantle corporate power and stop impunity), the global Alliance for a binding international treaty, among other national platforms in Latin America.

-Strategic litigation procedures, mainly through the preparation or third-party interventions (Amicus Curiae) before jurisdictional international bodies.

-Carrying out monitoring and documenting procedures concerning human rights violations aimed at strengthening strategic actors’ ability to conduct research and disseminate its outcomes in the international arena.

    - Coordinating advocacy visits (civil society delegations) to the European Institutions, as well as different United Nations bodies and other international organizations. By preparing public affairs strategies along with technical and political advice intended to enhance their actions in the public sphere we aspire to enhance our member’s impact in different spaces.

RIDHE’s actions are mainly focused on the Latin American and the Caribbean region. We have been providing technical support on a wide range of human rights topics to local NGOs operating in more than 20 countries from the central zone (El Salvador, Honduras, Haiti, Guatemala, Salvador, Nicaragua) and in South America (Colombia, Mexico, Bolivia, Chile, Venezuela, and Argentina).

Our strategic planning for 2020-2022 has defined Colombia, Venezuela, Nicaragua, and Mexico as our priority countries.

    Mission:
    - Articulate mediation strategies between different actors to ensure full respect for human rights and, above all, the fulfillment of international standards in this regard.
    - Foster respect for cultural diversity, integration, and reciprocity between cultures, countries, races, and religions by adopting a holistic view aimed at promoting a culture of peace and respect for human rights.
    - Promote values and actions for effective social change based on criteria of justice, peace, equality of opportunities, participation, solidarity, and concern for the environment

    Vision:
RIDHE bases its action on respect for international human rights law, humanitarian standards, and the EU legal framework on fundamental rights and international cooperation. We value the importance of articulating joint actions with other actors, such as diplomatic elements, government entities, and civil society actors in general, to strengthen human rights protection mechanisms, as well as promote a culture of peace based on equality of opportunities and equal treatment before the law.

    Communication activities

    - Human Rights Defenders: protection of Human Rights Defenders by providing them a voice before the European Institutions as well as the United Nations, and other regional organizations.

    - Vulnerable Groups (mainly: women’s rights; children’s rights and LGBTIQA+ Community; afro descendants): by calling upon the international community to address vulnerable groups’ needs and implement gender equality as an effective human right.

    - Freedom of expression, association, and assembly: promote any sort of fundamental freedoms associated with access to information, press freedom, and the right to defend human rights and the rule of law in a context of peaceful assembly.

    - The Right to Water: ensure that everyone has equal access to water by promoting its sustainable management and sanitation and advocating for the protection of rivers and watersheds.

    - Migration and Human Rights: RIDHE promotes respect for the human rights of migrants so that States guarantee adequate treatment by international standards on the matter, avoiding abuses and discriminatory conduct which can lead to fundamental rights violations under domestic and EU law standards.

    - Business and Human Rights: RIDHE develops workshops on business and corporate social responsibility as a commercial obligation committed to human rights in general and to the sustainable development of the communities in which they operate. We promote the proper application of the guiding principles approved by the UN on this matter and we actively participate in the intergovernmental working group created for the drafting and approval of an international treaty on multinational companies and human rights at the UN.

    - Environment and climate change: we urge States and the international community in general to adopt measures to protect the environment and prevent climate change. We are particularly engaged with indigenous communities' claims over global warming, as well as extractivist projects that risk threatening their cosmovision, and development model of life.

    - Strategic Advice and Consultancy: RIDHE’s main goal is based on capacity-building skills. We ensure training facilities and initiatives for our member organizations, mainly through specialized advice intended to prepare their claims before jurisdictional and quasi-jurisdictional bodies. Consultancy may encompass a set of actions, such as the drafting of briefs, press releases, petitions, third-party interventions (Amicus Curiae), and complaints before rapporteurs and treaty bodies, among others.

    - Public Affairs campaigns: we develop, plan, implement and manage strategic campaigns in the press and on our social networks to engage key institutional stakeholders on human rights violations.
