    Goals / Remit

    Consumer choice is pivotal for economic freedom and lifestyle decision. Regulators on local, national, and supranational levels keep regulating more and more areas of consumers' lives. This leads to less consumer choice and usually higher costs.
    Whether protectionism in the airline industry prevents more efficient airlines to sell cheaper tickets to passengers, excessive taxation of consumption serve as letters of indulgence, or branding bans destroy the brand value of companies. Consumers don't benefit but suffer from such regulation.
    In some cases paternalistic regulations cause even harm. Examples can be seen in more driving under influence cases in cities after banning ride-sharing services such as Uber or smokers being unable to switch to less harmful ways of consuming nicotine such as vaporizers. Branding bans lead to a higher accidental consumption of counterfeited products that can be of lethal consequence for the consumer.

    Communication activities

    I)The Fourth Industrial Revolution is well underway, and the member states of the European Union have fallen behind China and the United States in developing the necessary infrastructure to fully leverage its potential. The strength of the EU is its diversity of cultures and languages, but in the case of innovation, this diversity is proving to be a barrier to scaling new developments. While trade in goods may be high, digital trade remains limited by lack of harmonisation in digital markets, and the interventions of certain states that make investment more cumbersome.

    Failing to make the necessary investments to develop a 21st Century digital infrastructure in time will put the EU at a competitive disadvantage in global markets, hampering economic growth for the foreseeable future. At the foundation of technologies such as artificial intelligence and the internet of things, which promise huge gains in productivity, is the need for robust digital infrastructures and the accessibility of next generation bandwidth technologies.

    The Consumer Choice Center’s Digital Single Market campaign seeks to better the existing digital foundations of the European Union by contributing to the liberalisation and harmonisation of the European Digital Market.

    III)Brands Matter: Brands are a fundamental part of the European Union’s economy and play a key role in the everyday choices of each of us as consumers. We, the members of the Brands Matter Working Group, aim to advocate to European policy makers the importance of brands in a free and economically sustainable society.Therefore we invite policy makers in Europe to take the brand protection pledge: “I commit to oppose any policy measure that limits brand freedom.” In the coming months we are going to list all policy makers that have already taken the pledge here.
