    Goals / Remit

The Death Penalty Project is a legal action charity. Our mission is to protect people facing the death penalty, or other cruel punishments, and to support abolition in retentionist countries worldwide, with a focus on the Commonwealth. We provide access to justice to individuals, develop and promote human rights standards in criminal justice systems, and engage key stakeholders in dialogue on the death penalty.

    Main EU files targeted

The Death Penalty Project engages with EU Commissioners and their staff and with the Council of the European Union, to make sure that the abolition of the death penalty remains a priority of the external policy of the EU (see EU Guidelines on Death Penalty).

The Death Penalty Project has engaged with the EU’s human rights policies and initiatives, with a particular focus on the EU’s policy against the death penalty, working on EU funded projects. It is part of the EU-funded Global Consortium for Death Penalty Abolition, launched in 2024.

The Death Penalty Project has previously implemented EU-funded projects in Kenya (EIDHR/2017/154297/28) "Strengthening the rule of law and restricting the use of the death penalty leading to abolition" and in the Caribbean (EIDHR/2017/394-699), "Building a Platform for Abolition: Strengthening the Anti-Death Penalty Movement in Barbados and the Eastern Caribbean".
