Goals / Remit
Smurfit Kappa is one of the leading providers of paper-based packaging solutions in the world, with approx. 48,000 employees in over 350 production sites across 36 countries and with revenue of €10 billion in 2021. We are located in 23 countries in Europe, and 13 in the Americas. Our products, which are 100% renewable and produced sustainably, improve the environmental footprint of our customers.
We have a portfolio of paper-based packaging solutions, which is constantly updated with our market-leading innovations. This is enhanced through the benefits of our integration, with optimal paper design, logistics, timeliness of service, and our packaging plants sourcing most of their raw materials from our own paper mills.
We have a tradition supporting social, environmental and community initiatives in the countries where we operate. Through these projects we support the UN SDG, focusing on where we believe we have the greatest impact.Main EU files targeted
Smurfit Kappa closely follows developments regarding the policy framework for climate and energy, the circular economy and waste and waste recovery. We have a keen interest in ETS, fossil CO2 emission reduction targets, legislation regarding the use of renewable energy, the Green Deal legislation, Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation, Single-use plastic legislation, Producer responsibility schemes, etc.
We believe that European climate change policies should not be tightened in the absence of international agreements. We therefore recommend that the EU gives greater priority to improving the overall competitive situation of industry in Europe towards which lowering energy prices forms an important step. In general, we favour policies that promote the circular economy concept and stimulate the recovery of wastepaper. Wastepaper or recovered paper as it is called in our industry is the basis raw material for our base product which is paper produced on the basis of recovered papers (fibres).Address

The list below only covers meetings held since November 2014 with commissioners, their cabinet members or directors-general at the European Commission; other lobby meetings with lower-level staff may have taken place, but the European Commission doesn't proactively publish information about these meetings. For more information about which commissioner is responsible for which portfolio, check out this link: https://commissioners.ec.europa.eu/index_en All information below comes from European Commission web pages.
1 July 2024: We have noted that some meetings are appearing in duplicate, ie. some meetings seem to be listed twice. This seems to be because the Commission changes some element of a meeting data after the meeting has first been listed, which causes LobbyFacts to register it as a new meeting. We are investigating further.
