As a not-for-profit organisation, the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals Foundation (PETA UK) is a UK-based charity dedicated to establishing and protecting the rights of all animals. PETA UK is funded entirely by donations and all of those funds are used annually on our programs.

PETA UK is a company limited by guarantee and is a registered charity. It has no share capital and the liability of the members is limited to £1.

On 8 December 1995, PETA UK was incorporated under English law as a company limited by guarantee. All activities previously carried out by PETA UK were, on 8 December 1995 and thereafter, subsumed within PETA UK. In due course and as is required by English law, PETA UK will file annual company accounts at Companies House. PETA UK will operate on a 'not for profit' basis.

As a member of the PETA International Science Consortium Ltd. and PETA Science Consortium International e.V. ("the Science Consortium"), PETA UK promotes reliable and relevant regulatory testing approaches that protect human health and the environment while eliminating the use of animals. It works with industry, academics, and regulatory bodies to promote and fund non-animal research methods and regularly submits detailed scientific and policy-driven comments on a wide range of consultations involving animal-protection issues.

The group also has active programmes that aim to prevent animals from being abused for food, clothing, entertainment, or any other purpose. As a result of its work, numerous companies have pledged not to use fur, leather, or other animal-derived materials in their products or made other changes to benefit animals, as have many individuals. It has also provided information to help
secure convictions for cruelty-to-animals offences and has driven forward improved animal-protection legislation.


PETA UK has previously focused on the following EU initiatives:

1) The Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of Chemicals (REACH) Regulation
PETA UK has entered into extensive dialogue with ECHA and the European Commission, in addition to engaging with stakeholders including industry bodies, companies, the UK Directive 2010/63/EU competent authority, and other EU REACH competent authorities, in order to promote the use of non-animal test methods to fulfil REACH data requirements.

2) Directive 2010/63/EU on the Protection of Animals Used for Scientific Purposes
The group worked to influence the transposition of Directive 2010/63/EU into UK law, and as a result, the majority of Britain's higher standards were upheld. It continues to work with its members in responding to consultations – for example, on the guidance documents prepared by the UK Home Office on the implementation of the Animals (Scientific Procedures) Act 1986, the Article 58 review of Directive 2010/63/EU, and the preliminary opinion of the Scientific Committee on Health, Environmental and Emerging Risks on the need for non-human primates in biomedical research and the production and testing of products and devices (update 2017).

Furthermore, as a member of the Science Consortium, employees of PETA UK have provided technical comments and/or participated in competent authority meetings to aid the maximum implementation of the 3Rs -replacement, reduction, and refinement of tests on animals - during updates to the data requirements for Regulations 1107/2009 concerning the placing of plant protection products on the market, and Regulation 528/2012 concerning the making available on the market and use of biocidal products.

PETA UK employees have provided technical expertise to the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), engaged in harmonisation efforts to ensure that gains in one country or region are applied elsewhere, including in the EU, by providing and participated in EU stakeholder events where the Science Consortium has accredited status.
