    Observatory on Intolerance and Discrimination against Christians in Europe   (OIDAC Europe)

    Goals / Remit

    At OIDAC we research, analyze, document, and report cases of intolerance and discrimination against Christians in Europe; Inform and educate the public, lawmakers, and international institutions about the range of hostilities and marginalization Christians and Christian institutions face in Europe by providing reliable and objective data;
    Empower Christians to tell their stories and freely live their faith in the public square; Advocate for remedies; and emphasize the vital role religion plays in a mature and peaceful society.

    “Intolerance and Discrimination against Christians” is the phrase we use to describe the ranges of hostilities and marginalization Christians face in Europe.

    Examples include physical attacks and threats against individual Christians or Christian communities, desecration and vandalism of Christian sites, discriminatory laws, interference with parents’ rights, violations of freedom of religion, expression, association, and conscience, and exclusion (...)

    Main EU files targeted

    OIDAC Europe mainly focus on two specific fields that are interrelated with a wide range of other topics, which fall under the policies and initiatives of the EU. The first field OIDAC Europe focus on is the problem of hate crimes with an anti-Christian bias. Therefore, OIDAC Europe annually reports all documented cases to the OSCE, for their hate crime report. Hate crimes are first and foremost a materialised and visible form of discrimination and/or intolerance against a specific group of society. Hence, they are used to measure the current social climate in a given society.

    The second field OIDAC Europe is working in is the protection of fundamental rights such as religious freedom, freedom of speech, freedom of conscience, freedom of assembly and parental rights, which are protected under the Charter of Fundamental Rights of the EU.

    Due to this focus on tolerance and anti-discrimination and the protection of fundamental rights, the initiative on justice and fundamental rights of the EP, EC and Council is a policy field that OIDAC Europe closely follows and communicates about. Specifically the policies on International Human Rights, the EU Charter of Human Rights, Upholding the Rule of Raw and Combatting Discrimination. OIDAC Europe is also interested in the EU's initiatives on Migration and Home Affairs, specially the policy on Migration and Asylum, and the initiative on International Partnership and its policy on Peace and Governance that sets out to globally promote the protection of human rights.

    In general it can be said that the EU's main strategies to defend, strengthen and promote the democratic model, the respect for fundamental rights and anti-discrimination are at the core of OIDAC Europe's work.

    Communication activities

    In the past years OIDAC Europe annually published a research report that analyses the current situation of fundamental rights of Christians in Europe (EU countries and beyond) and presents the numbers on hate crimes with an anti-Christian bias. Furthermore, these reports were followed by press release and conferences. The reports are also sent out to a number of relevant Members of the European Parliament to update and inform them on the latest developments. In addition to the annual reports OIDAC Europe also published and distributed a research report on the fundamental right of freedom of speech, with case studies from Germany, France, Colombia and Mexico. A special field of research OIDAC Europe is working on, is the protection of the religious freedom of Christian converts, specially the ones who apply for asylum. Overall OIDAC Europe aims at educating the wider public about the importance of the protection of the rule of law and of fundamental freedoms in order to maintain a stable democratic order, which is important for the whole of society and not just Christians. But the quality of a liberal, divers and democratic society is often measured by how individual groups are treated.
