Goals / Remit
Established in 1951, IOM is the leading inter-governmental organization in the field of migration and works closely with governmental, intergovernmental and non-governmental partners.
With 157 member states, a further 10 states holding observer status and offices in more than 150 countries, IOM is dedicated to promoting humane and orderly migration for the benefit of all. It does so by providing services and advice to governments and migrants.
IOM works to help ensure the orderly and humane management of migration, to promote international cooperation on migration issues, to assist in the search for practical solutions to migration problems and to provide humanitarian assistance to migrants in need, including refugees and internally displaced people.
The IOM Constitution recognizes the link between migration and economic, social and cultural development, as well as to the right of freedom of movement.
IOM works in the four broad areas of migration management:
- Migration and development
- Facilitating migration
- Regulating migration
- Forced migration
IOM activities that cut across these areas include the promotion of international migration law, policy debate and guidance, protection of migrants' rights, migration health and the gender dimension of migration.Main EU files targeted
The activities carried out by IOM are geared towards supporting the EU 2020 Strategy and the new Strategic Guidelines for the area of Freedom, Security and Justice.
IOM fully supports the EU's overarching strategic framework, the Global Approach to Migration and Mobility (GAMM), and its four pillars: Organizing and facilitating legal migration and mobility;Preventing and reducing irregular migration and trafficking in human beings; Promoting international protection and enhancing the external dimension of asylum policy; and Maximizing the development impact of migration.
IOM actively contribute to EU policy debates on migration through participation in consultations held by the European Commission and European Parliament, and by providing its input to EU Council Presidencies and committees.
IOM has contributed to consultations on the EU’s financial framework, the Global Approach to Migration, the Task Force Mediterranean, and the EU’s agenda concerning migration and mobility for development, among others. IOM also supports EU dialogue with third countries on migration issues.Address

The list below only covers meetings held since November 2014 with commissioners, their cabinet members or directors-general at the European Commission; other lobby meetings with lower-level staff may have taken place, but the European Commission doesn't proactively publish information about these meetings. For more information about which commissioner is responsible for which portfolio, check out this link: https://commissioners.ec.europa.eu/index_en All information below comes from European Commission web pages.
1 July 2024: We have noted that some meetings are appearing in duplicate, ie. some meetings seem to be listed twice. This seems to be because the Commission changes some element of a meeting data after the meeting has first been listed, which causes LobbyFacts to register it as a new meeting. We are investigating further.
