Goals / Remit
We are a UK-wide statutory body, independent of government, set up by Parliament to act in the public interest by regulating chiropractors. The Chiropractors Act 1994 defines our statutory duty as ‘to develop and regulate the profession of chiropractic’.
It is a legal requirement for chiropractors in the UK to be registered with the GCC and to abide by our Code of Practice and Standard of Proficiency [link]. It is a criminal offence for anyone who is not GCC registered to describe themselves as a chiropractor or to imply they are a chiropractor.
We currently regulate around 2,700 chiropractors who are listed on www.gcc-uk.
To be eligible for GCC registration, chiropractors must meet legal criteria. For example:
a. a GCC recognised degree in chiropractic or, if holding a non-GCC recognised overseas chiropractic degree, pass a test of competence
b. be good character and in good health, both physically and mentally
c. have professional indemnity insurance
d. complete mandatory continuing professional development annually.
We undertake our statutory duties through four committees:
a. Education.
b. Investigation.
c. Professional Conduct.
d. Health.
The GCC is accountable to Parliament and subject to scrutiny by the Council for Healthcare Regulatory Excellence. We are one of nine UK regulators of health professionals.Main EU files targeted
