European Water Partnership

The European Water Partnership (EWP) was set up in 2006 to address the urgent water challenges Europe faces. The EWP is an independent, value- based, non-profit organisation, with an open, inclusive and multi-stakeholder membership. It harnesses European capacity, helps to coordinate initiatives and activities on European and international water issues and undertakes worldwide promotion of European expertise related to water.

The ultimate goal of the EWP is to elaborate strategies and implement concrete actions to achieve the objectives of the Water Vision for Europe, which translates European legislation into easier understandable language and concrete objectives. The Water Vision for Europe was launched in 2008 and is supported by the European Commission, European Parliament and European Council.

The EWP statutes specify that the association’s goal is to “achieve the objectives laid down in the Water Vision for Europe, and specifically the improving of the environment by minimising the impact of water-use on the environment in its broadest sense”.

The association attempts to achieve this objective by:
a) being a collaborative project to work as a coordination authority between organisations, institutions and companies from the public as well as from the private sector that have an interest in international water matters
b) provide advice to third parties who show an interest in water issues and initiatives adopted in the area, more specifically at European level
c) any other legal activities and means that may contribute to achieving this objective, i.e.:
o by creating a network environment between members (applies to all objectives);
o by representing the interests of members in communication with EU Institutions, national governments, international institutions or any other type of organisation whose activities may be considered to affect the interests of the members;
o by encouraging international regulation and standardisation and by supporting the development of new and existing regulations and policies ;
o by stimulating research on water technologies and other water issues.
