    Goals / Remit

The EUPJ works to foster and stimulate the growth of Progressive Judaism throughout Europe because we believe that Progressive Judaism, with its combination of respect for Jewish tradition and openness to modernity, provides the blueprint for Jewish continuity in the 21st century.

The EUPJ is the umbrella organisation linking and supporting more than 170 Liberal, Progressive and Reform communities in 17 countries, with new communities regularly seeking membership. Our continued growth across Europe is testament to the fact our approach unites Jews who want a non-fundamentalist, inclusive, egalitarian and modern interpretation of Judaism. The EUPJ is one of the seven regions of the World Union for Progressive Judaism (WUPJ) with its headquarters in Jerusalem which is the largest movement of affiliated Jews in the world with 1.8 million members

    Main EU files targeted

The EC has dialogue with individual religions about various matters from time to time – this frequently calls for specialists on a particular topic. We want to represent Progressive Judaism in this dialogue.

We are involved in interfaith dialogue.

We are involved in the fight against Anti-Semitism, specifically and against hate speech and intolerance generally.

We engage in promoting a tolerant, inclusive, and open European society

We defend Europe's fundamental values and want to participate in its defence.

We are partners in the EU-funded Networks Overcoming Anti-Semitism project: https://www.noa-project.eu/about-noa/.

For 2021, we have applied for both EU- and non-EU grants to promote lay leadership education, synagogue security, and interfaith dialogue with our Know Your Neighbor project for schoolchildren to visit our synagogues. We also have launched a webinar series which will be transformed in 2021 to a full radio show on Radiio Judaica.

    Other financial info

So far, all our work in Brussels has been voluntary. We have been fundraising to build up the office and representation in front of the European Union institutions. We receive a free office from the Congregation Beth Hillel in Brussels.

In 2019, we completed and published the Holocaust Remembrance Project: https://www.holocaustremembranceproject.com/.

In light of Brexit, we have set up a Dutch foundation to oversee our EU operations. This Dutch foundation has won an EU grant in 2020 and will be cooperating with a group of other Jewish organisations to form a Network Against Anti-Semitism.

For 2021, we have appliedfor a series of additional grants; our upcoming budget will depend on their success.
