Introduction
The European Geriatric Medicine Society (EuGMS) was founded in June 2000 to develop and foster geriatric medicine in Europe and encourage the provision of geriatric medical services to all older European citizens. It would promote education, continuing professional development and high quality evidence-based geriatric medicine. By 2014, the EuGMS activities involve several Task and Finish Groups (Working Groups) and Special Interest Groups. The EUGMS has gained international reputation and has good cooperation with an increasing number of European and international organizations.
The first major EuGMS congress was held in Paris in August 2001 and by September 2001 the EuGMS was registered in Brussels, Belgium, its bye-laws published and later internal rules drafted.
The EuGMS Full Board includes representatives from all of the EU states, and the European Economic Area (Norway, Switzerland and Iceland). The EuGMS has expanded with the enlargement of the EU to include the new member states. The EuGMS also has states as observer members. Each Member State in the Full Board has one vote and one representative.
The EuGMS has close links with a variety of networks in Europe including the UEMS Geriatric Medicine, IAGG ER, EMA (European Medicine Agency) and the European Academy for Medicine of Ageing (EAMA). They hold an observer status on the Full Board in order to promote mutual collaboration. EuGMS fosters good relationships with other political and professional organisations dealing with health-related problems in older people within and outside Europe. The EuGMS and American AGS maintain a close and fruitful relationship.
EuGMS congress activities started with the first congress in Paris in 2001. It was followed by congresses every second year until 2010 whereafter EuGMS congresses have been organized every year, preferably in September. The EUGMS congress 2017 was in Nice. Future congresses will be organized across Europe, 2018 in Berlin, 2019 in Krakow, 2020 in Athens.
The purpose of the annual congress is to provide education and networking opportunities for the members. This is accomplished through a possible one day pre-congress meetings, workshops, and other educational activities, followed by a 2 day conference of plenary sessions with state-of- the-art lectures, podium presentations, as well as parallel sessions and an exhibit area with exhibitors. In addition, before and during the congress, the EuGMS also conducts its annual business and board meetings.
EuGMS has its own scientific Journal, EGM (6 issues per year)Other activities
