Goals / Remit
Energy Traders Europe exists to promote competition and transparency in the European energy sector.
We represent the interests of over 160 companies, from across Europe, which trade gas, electricity, carbon and renewable energy certificates. Our goal is to create larger, better working markets which lead to positive outcomes for customers. We do this by developing contracts and IT standards which make the sector more efficient and by partnering with policy makers to help shape future rules.
We do this by:
- Improving the design of European gas, electricity and associated markets for the benefit of the overall economy, society and especially end consumers.
- Developing and maintaining standard wholesale supply contracts and standardising related transaction and business processes.
- Facilitating debate amongst TSOs, regulators, policy makers, traders and others in the value chain about the future of the European energy market.Main EU files targeted
Energy Traders Europe promotes and facilitates European energy trading in open, transparent, sustainable and liquid wholesale markets.
Our principle activities are focussed on proposals which impact on the trade of electricity, gas and carbon. We also have interests in hydrogen and the development of the trading of renewable certificates. This includes:
- The EU Emissions Trading System.
- The design of electricity and gas markets at national and european level - with a focus on creating a single, competitive market.
- Financial Regulation - Including REMIT, MIFID, MAR, EMIR.
- The development of markets to trade certificates.
Our current focus is on all aspects of the recently concluded Electricity Market Design Proposal, the update of the Regulation on Market Integrity and Transparency, the hydrogen and gas markets decarbonisation package and various measures aimed at enhancing security of supply.

As Energy Traders Europe is active at national and European level the vast majority of colleagues work at national and European level. We also focus on the standardisation of industry processes - meaning some colleagues will focus on a mix of standardisation and advocacy work.
Our EU influencing activity typically comes through considering EU legislative proposals and responding to them - normally in writing. Thus a majority of the time detailed above relates to the development of these positions - in collaboration with members. A relatively small proportion is spent discussing the issues with representatives of the institutions.Person in charge of EU relations

Other financial info
Energy Traders Europe represents the collective interests of our circa 160 member companies.
We raise revenue by charging membership fees. These fees are used to cover the costs of our activities. These activities fall into 3 broad categories:
- Developing and maintaining standards (the EFET Master Agreement is the basis on which much physical trading of gas and power takes place in Europe).
- Monitoring and engaging with national energy and carbon policy in various parts of Europe. We are active across national energy markets - so much activity is focussed on national capitals.
- Engaging with European measures and working with policy makers, grid companies and Transmission System Operators.

Communication activities
Energy Traders Europe is focussed on making the case for markets as the best means of delivering least cost-decarbonisation, security of supply and affordability for customers. All our activities stem from this goal. They can broadly be split into 3 categories:
- Monitoring and influencing national energy policies.
- Engaging with European energy and carbon policy measures.
- Maintaining and improving a suite of industry standards which allow energy to be traded in a more efficient manner.
Material is available via our website (see for example the Insight series, explaining aspects of energy markets). We are also members of ENZA (The European Net Zero Alliance).Other activities

The list below only covers meetings held since November 2014 with commissioners, their cabinet members or directors-general at the European Commission; other lobby meetings with lower-level staff may have taken place, but the European Commission doesn't proactively publish information about these meetings. For more information about which commissioner is responsible for which portfolio, check out this link: https://commissioners.ec.europa.eu/index_en All information below comes from European Commission web pages.
1 July 2024: We have noted that some meetings are appearing in duplicate, ie. some meetings seem to be listed twice. This seems to be because the Commission changes some element of a meeting data after the meeting has first been listed, which causes LobbyFacts to register it as a new meeting. We are investigating further.
