    Goals / Remit

    Supporting the development of biochar applications and fostering its long-term success. The industry consortium:
    - Supports the development of a European biochar and pyrolysis industry, particularly by eliminating / alleviating market entry barriers
    - Is committed to the principles of sustainable production with regional raw material as well as to adhere to strict environmental standards
    - Promotes the use of biochar in large scale, in order to achieve with this Negative Emission Technology (NET) meaningful contributions to carbon sequestration and thus to mitigate climate change

    Main EU files targeted

    We have been nominated as an observer for the Expert Group on Fertilizing Products.
    Our Secretary-General is also expert in the Soil Health Expert Group as well as the Carbon Removals EG.
    We are currently following: Strubias Working Group, The 2030 Climate Target Plan and, Phosphorous recuperation, Legislation on biosolids in Agriculture, particularly the use of biochar.

    Communication activities

    The EBI is committed to the development of biochar applications and their dissemination in order to provide a meaningful contribution to a healthy planet.
    Regarding the above mentioned mandate, the use as a soil amendment is of particular importance. Our aim is to consult with regards to sustainable standards of production and use of high quality biochar.
    EBI also advocates for improved ways of recycling, e.g. Phosphorous recycling through pyrolysis (see: https://circabc.europa.eu/sd/a/d370424d-65fe-4912-bc82-7c051fccf230/Biosolids_Pyrolysis_EBI_HG.pdf).

    Other activities

    EBI has been nominated as an observer for the Expert Group on Fertilizing Products.

    The EBI has participated at the Carbon Farming Roundtable in Sept 2020.
