Goals / Remit
EASAC - the European Academies Science Advisory Council - is a network of the national science academies of the EU Member States, Switzerland, Norway and the United Kingdom. It provides a collective voice for European science on wide-ranging policy areas. EASAC's mission reflects the fact that science in all its forms is central to many aspects of modern life and that a consideration of the scientific dimension is a pre-requisite to effective policymaking. EASAC’s strategy is framed around five core objectives: 1. to influence EU policy development and implementation, and national policy within EU Member States; 2. to inform EU contributions to global policy-making; 3. to provide an independent platform for debate and for convening scientists, policy-makers and publics; 4. to build the science policy capacity of EU academies and scientists; and 5. to build a progressive and more resilient national science academies’ network.
Main EU files targeted
EASAC works in three broad programmes: Environment, Energy, and Biosciences and Public Health. It provides relevant in-depth information for upcoming topics of the EU institutions within and across these programmes.

Complementary Information
The highest level of governance is the EASAC Council which has 30 individual members - highly experienced scientists nominated by each national science academy of every EU Member State that has one, Norway, Switzerland and the UK, the Academia Europaea and ALLEA . The Council agrees the initiation of projects, appoints members of project groups, reviews drafts and approves reports for publication. The day-to-day business of EASAC is handled by a the EASAC Secretariat, which is hosted by the Austrian Academy of Sciences since 1 January 2024.
Central to the success of EASAC is close contact with the target policy-making parts of the EU - Parliament, Council and Commission - and familiarity with current policy developments, as well, of course, as expertise in the relevant science.Person in charge of EU relations

The InterAcademy Partnership (IAP) http://www.interacademies.org:
IAP is the global network of science, engineering & medical academies working together to provide independent expert advice on scientific, technological & health issues. Under InterAcademy Partnership, more than 140 national and regional member academies work together. IAP has four regional networks (EASAC, NASAC, IANAS, AASSA). EASAC is the regional network for Europe.
IAP works closely with its member academies to strengthen the role that science plays in society and to advise public officials on the scientific aspects of critical global issues; helps establish science academies in countries where academies do not exist and assists young and small academies to become more prominent in their own countries;
sponsors programmes for young scientists designed to help them build strong foundations for successful careers and to more effectively engage decision makers.Member organisations

Communication activities
EASAC typically publishes 3-5 outputs (in-depth reports, statements, commentaries) per year in the above mentioned programmes which are then usually launched in Brussels and through a variety of media channels. Wider stakeholders are typically engaged at launch events, and where practicable throughout the lifetime of any project.
EASAC member academies hold similar events in their own respective member states.Other activities

The list below only covers meetings held since November 2014 with commissioners, their cabinet members or directors-general at the European Commission; other lobby meetings with lower-level staff may have taken place, but the European Commission doesn't proactively publish information about these meetings. For more information about which commissioner is responsible for which portfolio, check out this link: https://commissioners.ec.europa.eu/index_en All information below comes from European Commission web pages.
1 July 2024: We have noted that some meetings are appearing in duplicate, ie. some meetings seem to be listed twice. This seems to be because the Commission changes some element of a meeting data after the meeting has first been listed, which causes LobbyFacts to register it as a new meeting. We are investigating further.
