Goals / Remit
EuroGOOS is an International Non-Profit Association of national governmental agencies and research organisations, committed to European-scale operational oceanography within the context of the Global Ocean Observing System (GOOS), of the UNESCO's Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC-UNESCO). Founded in 1994, EuroGOOS has members from 18 European countries providing operational oceanographic services and carrying out marine research. Regional operational systems (ROOS) are developed through EuroGOOS in the Arctic, Baltic, North West Shelf, Ireland-Biscay-Iberian area, and the Mediterranean. EuroGOOS promotes the consolidation of the Black Sea observing system. EuroGOOS working groups, networks of observing platforms, and the ROOS foster cooperation, unlock marine data, and deliver common strategies and priorities towards an integrated, sustained, and fit-for-purpose European ocean observing and forecasting system.

Communication activities
EuroGOOS works to identify European priorities for ocean observing; promote the development of underpinning science and technology at European, regional and global scales; foster cooperation; coordinate the development of products and services; and ensure coordination of the European contribution to sustained ocean observing systems.
The EuroGOOS objectives are implemented through the EuroGOOS Office, EuroGOOS Task Teams (networks of ocean observing platforms), Working Groups, and the Regional Operational Oceanographic Systems (ROOS) providing operational ocean observing and forecasting in five European regional sea areas. The EuroGOOS working groups develop recommendations for policy and decision makers as well as ocean observing funders and implementers.
EuroGOOS is involved in a number of EU projects and initiatives and works closely with the European Environment Agency, the European Commission, the Copernicus services, EMODnet, and the European Marine Board. This work includes, among others, stakeholder events, forums, consultations, as well as other engagement and outreach activities promoting fit-for-purpose and sustained European ocean observing and forecasting system responsive to the needs of society and the European and global policies.
Every three years, EuroGOOS is holding an international conference on operational oceanography providing a platform for its large and diverse community, regional operational systems, and European and international sister initiatives and projects, to promote cooperation and synergies.Other activities
EuroGOOS is a leading facilitator of the European Ocean Observing System - a coordinating framework being developed to advance and sustain the European ocean observing capacity. To this end, EuroGOOS works hand in hand with a broad network of partners, chairs the EOOS steering group, provides the EOOS secretariat, and coordinates the EOOS communications.
