    Goals / Remit

    EUROPA NOSTRA is the European federation of heritage NGO's. Covering more than 40 countries in Europe, the organisation is the voice of civil society committed to safeguarding and promoting Europe's cultural and natural heritage. We campaign to save Europe's endangered monuments, sites and landscapes, in particular through "The 7 Most Endangered" programme, run in partnership with the European Investment Bank Institute. We celebrate excellence through the European Heritage Awards / Europa Nostra Awards (until 2018: EU Prize for Cultural Heritage / Europa Nostra Awards). We contribute to mainstreaming heritage in European and national policies and actions. Founded in 1963, Europa Nostra is today recognised as the most representative and influential heritage network in Europe.

    Main EU files targeted

    Europa Nostra raises awareness on the extraordinary value of cultural heritage for Europe and its inhabitants, advocates for cultural heritage towards policy-makers at all levels and stimulates mainstreaming of heritage in public policies and in public consciousness. As selected Stakeholder for the European Year of Cultural Heritage 2018 (EYCH 2018), Europa Nostra assisted with the implementation of this important Year at European level and was a partner for key initiatives and events. The European Year is also the overarching theme of Europa Nostra's Network project "Sharing Heritage - Sharing Values (2017-21), which is co-funded by the EU Creative Europe programme. Its activities contributed to the EYCH and will continue to contribute to sustaining its legacy beyond 2018, such as through the European Framework for Action on Cultural Heritage, the Work Plan for Culture 2019-2022 and EU programme proposals for the MFF 2021-2027. Europa Nostra strives to create synergies with other EU initiatives and actions such as the European Capitals of Culture, the European Heritage Label, the European Heritage Days, other EU Prizes and the EU Strategy for International Cultural Relations, and follows related policy developments.

    ii) celebrating excellence through the European Heritage Awards / Europa Nostra Awards, jointly organised by Europa Nostra and the European Commission since 2002;
    iii) managing the "7 Most Endangered" programme with the European Investment Bank Institute as a founding partner;

    Other activities

    Europa Nostra has regularly been invited to attend the meetings of the Reflection Group "EU and Cultural Heritage" as a civil society observer. In 2017-2018 Europa Nostra was a selected member of the EYCH 2018 Stakeholder Committee of the European Commission and previously participated in several other structured dialogues between the European Commission and the cultural sector (Voices of Culture). Europa Nostra is a member of the DiscoverEU Stakeholder group. Since 2019, Europa Nostra is also a member organisation of the Expert Group established by the European Commission to provide advice and expertise on cultural heritage matters.

    The list below only covers meetings held since November 2014 with commissioners, their cabinet members or directors-general at the European Commission; other lobby meetings with lower-level staff may have taken place, but the European Commission doesn't proactively publish information about these meetings. For more information about which commissioner is responsible for which portfolio, check out this link: https://commissioners.ec.europa.eu/index_en All information below comes from European Commission web pages.

    1 July 2024: We have noted that some meetings are appearing in duplicate, ie. some meetings seem to be listed twice. This seems to be because the Commission changes some element of a meeting data after the meeting has first been listed, which causes LobbyFacts to register it as a new meeting. We are investigating further.
