Òmnium Cultural is a cultural non-governmental organization, with more than 185.000 members and 59 years of history. Since it was founded at the height of the 40-year Franco dictatorship on 11 July 1961, Òmnium Cultural was launched to combat the censorship and persecution of Catalan culture and to fill the gap left by the political and civil institutions of Catalonia that were forbidden by the dictatorship.

For this reason, Òmnium Cultural is undoubtedly a pillar of the promotion of Catalan language and culture, as well as a key defender of civil and human rights, with an increasing involvement at both European and worldwide level.

A direct consequence of this role is the highest commitment to culture, its heritage and its language the organization has upheld for nearly 60 years. Hence, the need to monitor closely all legislative initiatives relating to culture and civil and human rights.

After the New Agenda adopted by the Commission in May 2018 we are presently following these European legislative initiatives and processes closely:

    - The Convention for the Protection of Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms.
    - The European Charter for Regional or Minority Languages.
    - All reports and recommendations made by the European Charter for Regional or Minority Languages (ECRML). In that connection, we would particularly like to emphasize its fifth report of the Committee of Experts in respect of Spain.
    - The new European Centre for Modern Languages of the Council of Europe (ECML)'s programme 2020-23 and its 9 projects and 12 Training and Consultancy activities.
    - All sources relating to the cultural and human rights field available in the Think Tank's website of the European Parliament.
    - The legal framework for the specific subject of Culture Policy on Culture’s role in EU development cooperation.
    - The legal framework for the specific subject of Culture Policy on Culture and the EU’s international relations.
    - The legal framework for the specific subject of Culture Programme on European Heritage Label.
    - Any initiative related to the cultural and human rights field available in the European Citizens' Initiative website, such as the ongoing initiative "Cohesion policy for the equality of the regions and sustainability of the regional cultures" (Commission registration number: ECI(2019)000007) and the valid initiative "Minority Safe Pack" (Commission registration number: ECI(2017)000004) with more than 48.600 Spanish valid statements of support."

    Communication activities

Omnium Cultural has an extensive program of activities, campaigns and programs to develop its aims. Its actions are developed all around the region of Catalonia. Besides the central headquarters in Barcelona, there are also 44 offices and groups in differents cities and towns in the region. These local branches are ruled by volunteers with the assistance of staff members.
Our cultural projects are usually organized on yearly-basis actions and prizes. Examples:

    a. VOC. Audiovisual content in Catalan Awards
It recognizes the best short films, webs, videoblogs and brand new website formats in Catalan, mainly done by young creators. 2020’s edition had more than 130 registered projects, and was seen by more than 3.000 people in movie theaters all around Catalonia.
    b. The Night of Santa Llúcia
It is the annual ceremony dedicated to Catalan Literature. During the ceremony, the most important prizes of Catalan literature are awarded: for novels (Premi Sant Jordi, 60.000€ prize), poetry (Premi Carles Riba), short stories (Premi Mercè Rodoreda), as well as a communication and an international award. Also, the two main prizes for literature aimed at teenagers are awarded that night.
    c. Òmnium Prize for the Best Novel of the year in Catalan Language
This prize recognizes the best novel written in Catalan. It was created to increase awareness and prestige of Catalan literature both within and outside this cultural field, as well as to help increase readership. It is given directly by Omnium, for novels that have already been published, and the prize is 20.000€.
    d. The Honorary Award of Catalan Literature
Created in 1969, the award is given annually to a person who, through his/her Catalan-language output, and because of the importance of his/her intellectual work, has contributed significantly to the cultural advancement of the Catalan language. In 2020, the poet Enric Casasses won the 52nd edition of this prize, that gives the winner 20.000€.
    e. The Inkwell of Catalan Literature (El Tinter de les Lletres Catalanes)
This celebration brings together some of the various literary prizes for authors between the ages of 6 and 18, and it has the highest participation for an event of its kind in Europe. It seeks to promote the creativity of children and youth and recognize emerging values within literature. 160.000 kids from all over the Catalan-speaking region participated in last year’s edition.
    g. Freedom Party (Festa per la Llibertat)
Òmnium organises a cultural event every year since 2010, open to everybody, to celebrate the Day of Catalonia, gathering hundreds of organisations that can show their activities related with culture and education. Also, Omnium co-organises a massive peaceful demonstration that gathers thousands of people in a peaceful, cheerful rally. The most attended editions had more than 1,5 million participants, that is, around 20% of the region’s total population.
Apart from the mentioned yearly cultural prizes , Omnium Cultural also does other projects that have a specific time-frame, and that are used to achieve the goals of the NGO. some examples ares:

    We are School (Som Escola)
Òmnium is founder and a leading this platform that joints more than 50 civic and cultural organisations and the whole educational community in Catalonia to defend and improve the Catalan model of education and the social cohesion and equity it has achieved in the region. The aim of the project is to encourage the education in Catalan at all ages, so all children educated in Catalan-speaking territories have the opportunity to learn it. It has a potential to reach almost 1 million children.

20N-Justice for the crimes of the Franco era
This project aims to achieve a reparation for the victims of the Franco dictatorship, and to punish those who were guilty and were not punished at the time.
