    Goals / Remit

    HelpAge International is the secretariat to a global
    network of organisations promoting the right of
    all older people to lead dignified, healthy and
    secure lives.

    We have continued to strive for a world in which every older woman and man can say:
    “I have the income I need”
    “I enjoy the best possible health and quality of life”
    “I am safe and secure, free from discrimination and abuse”
    “My voice is heard”

    We worked towards this vision by:
    • providing direct assistance to poor and vulnerable older people, including in humanitarian crises;
    • advocating and campaigning for changes in policies and attitudes towards ageing and older people, and that these policies take account of gender and disability;
    • amplifying the voice of older people and network members locally, nationally and internationally so they can influence the policies that affect them;
    • using evidence generated by our own work and that of network members to inform global action and deba (...)

    HelpAge engages actively in the debate about social protection in EU development cooperation. This has involved participating in the various consultations organised by the EC around the communication on this issue and organising events involving MEPs in collaboration with other civil society organisations.

    HelpAge works with DG ECHO on the issue of older people in emergencies. This involves collaborative policy work, input to consultations and regular participation in ECHO partners events.

    HelpAge is active in the field of Development Education and Awareness-Raising and we have been working with a number of our EU network members to raise public awareness of issues around older people in development and to connect these members of the public to MEPs to build greater awareness and support for these issues within the European Parliament.

    HelpAge is engaging at the global level on ensuring inclusive implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals and the 2030 Agenda. At the EU level, this involves linking with the team in DG DEVCO leading on this process, inputting to EC public consultation or other processes relating to this issue plus joint advocacy with civil society organisations at the EU level including through the CONCORD platform.

    HelpAge is also working with its network of members across EU Member States to engage in the UN process towards a UN convention on the rights of older people and opening a dialogue with the EU institutions and Member States around older people's rights. This also involves contact with various stakeholders at EU level, including institutions as well as NGOs.

    The list below only covers meetings held since November 2014 with commissioners, their cabinet members or directors-general at the European Commission; other lobby meetings with lower-level staff may have taken place, but the European Commission doesn't proactively publish information about these meetings. For more information about which commissioner is responsible for which portfolio, check out this link: https://commissioners.ec.europa.eu/index_en All information below comes from European Commission web pages.

    1 July 2024: We have noted that some meetings are appearing in duplicate, ie. some meetings seem to be listed twice. This seems to be because the Commission changes some element of a meeting data after the meeting has first been listed, which causes LobbyFacts to register it as a new meeting. We are investigating further.
