Die Open Search Foundation führt Projekte und Aktivitäten zur Schaffung der wissenschaftlich-technischen und gesellschaftlichen Grundlagen einer offen und freien Internet-Suche für und in Europa durch. Sie fördert durch ihr Wirken die Schaffung der wissenschaftlich-technischen und gesellschaftlichen Voraussetzungen für eine offene Internet-Suche. Sie arbeitet hierfür über ihre Außenwirkung und Netzwerke auf eine breite gesellschaftliche Sensibilisierung sowie die Schaffung der rechtlich-organisatorischen Rahmenbedingungen einer offenen und freien Internet-Suche in und für Europa hin. Dies geschieht auf Grundlage der europäischen Rechts- und Werteordnung und zur Stärkung des Rechts auf informationelle Selbstbestimmung sowie des Rechts auf Privatsphäre im Internet.
