Goals / Remit
Established as an independent foundation in 1986 to promote ACP-EU cooperation, ECDPM facilitates improved international cooperation between the EU and its Southern partners in Africa, the Caribbean and the Pacific. It does this by supporting policy dialogue and conducting analysis related to key policy areas such as trade, international relations, governance and development. Fundamental in our work is strengthening the capacities of public, private and civil society organisations in the ACP, Africa in particular, to better manage their own development policies and international cooperation.
ECDPM’s efforts aim to reduce the asymmetry in power, resources and capacity that generally exists between developed and developing countries. The Centre also works with governments and with non-governmental organisations in Europe to make their development policies and instruments more effective and to ensure greater coherence across EU policy areas that affect developing countries.
The Centre organises its work around three thematic policy areas: trade, governance and development policy and international relations. These themes are supported by units geared towards knowledge management and communications, institutional relations and policy innovation.
ECDPM employs a three-pronged strategy to improve the quality of policymaking between the European Union and the developing world:
• facilitating long-term key policy processes involving a variety of partners;
• carrying out strategic research, knowledge management, networking and information services;
• developing and maintaining strategic partnerships to support institutional development of key policy actors.
As ECDPM’s partners in the ACP and Europe modify and redefine their relationships in light of the realities of the day, they entrust us to act as an independent adviser and non- partisan sounding board. The challenge for ECDPM is to help advance the international cooperation agenda and to explore the best approaches for tackling emerging policy issues at the interface of trade and development, peace and security, governance and human rights. Other major challenges relate to regional integration, sustainable energy, climate change, migration and knowledge creation.Main EU files targeted
