Goals / Remit
FIATA was founded in Vienna/Austria on May 31, 1926. We are a non-governmental organisation, represents today an industry covering approximately 40,000 forwarding and logistics firms, employing around 10 million people in 160 countries.
FIATA's main objectives are
to unite the freight forwarding industry worldwide
to represent, promote and protect the interests of the industry by participating as advisors or experts in meetings of international bodies dealing with transportation
to familiarise trade and industry and the public at large with the services rendered by freight forwarders through the dissemination of information, distribution of publications, etc.
to improve the quality of services rendered by freight forwarders by developing and promoting uniform forwarding documents, standard trading conditions, etc.
to assist with vocational training for freight forwarders, liability insurance problems, tools for electronic commerce including electronic data interchange (EDI) and barcode.Main EU files targeted
In addition to working in coordination with CLECAT, FIATA has a dedicated Region Europe which coordinates with our advisory bodies and institutes on the numerous European initiatives coordinated by the EU. The key groups and topics followed can be viewed below:

FIATA is totally self-financed, by means of Members' contributions.
Members pay their contribution according to their status, individual members pay a token membership and Association Members pay in proportion to the number of their own members and their countries' UN budget. -

Communication activities
FIATA Recently a hosted an Enlarged FIATA/UIC Contact Group meeting in Shenzhen, China to showcase great potential for rail freight on the China-Europe rail link and promote advances in the Euro-Asian Transport Links (EATL) project: http://fiata.com/media/press-releases/2016/12-may.html
Our Multimodal Institutes coordinates with various UNECE Working Groups and contributes input. We will participate in the upcoming UNECE 59th session of WP.24 and the 70th Session of UNITED NATIONS ECE Working Party on Rail Transport.
In addition, we are also part of the EU’s Digital Transport and Logistics Forum (DTLF) contributing to discussion that will lead to a single digital economy. We also contribute to a number of UN/CEFACT recommendations in the field of single window, multimodal and trade facilitation monitoring mechanism.Other activities
FIATA leaves the coordination of EU activities to CLEAT, with the exception of such activities where relevant consequences entail also outside of the EU, as is the case in DTLF.
