    Goals / Remit

For PAE, quality of life for a chronic pain patient means giving the patient the right to choose the best possible solutions and support to live their life according to their possibilities and wishes.

PAE aims to promote awareness of chronic pain, to contribute to creating a European policy on chronic pain and to reduce the impact of chronic pain on the European society on all areas.

In order to reach our goals, PAE initiates and develops the following actions:

Working in close relation with the other stakeholders
Gather and distribute relative information on chronic pain from the patients' point of view.
Establish a good relationship with potential sponsors
Promote and or initiate research on chronic pain
    Growing the association
Obtaining visibility through events, website, media coverage

    Main EU files targeted

Through our partnership with the European Pain Federation (EFIC) in the Societal Impact of Pain Platform (SIP) ( See details below)
We responded to the Comprehensive Approach to Mental Health, and continue to work within the areas of the EU Health Data Space Plan, Healthy Workplaces, and the Beating Cancer Plan and developed position papers from the pain perspective.

    Public Consultations on Health issues
In 2023, PAE was part of the preEU elections discussions promoting the chronic pain agenda with several MEPs and creating with SIP the SIP BoE, launched in 2024, and officially presented in an event in the EU parliament.

    Complementary Information

Throughout 2023, the board members and PAE President, 7 persons, were the most concerned with the stated objectives and actions. The President and board members act on a voluntary basis.
They have only their expenses reimbursed. (Any travel and subsistence costs).
In 2023, we had one member of staff who supported the board in their activities. This staff member stopped working with PAE by the end of the year (2023). In 2024, board members assumed all activities of the organization on a voluntary basis.

    Other financial info

On 31/12/2022 we closed the year with a plus of 17.047,51 euros while on 31/12/2023 with a loss of 4.641,96. Given that PAE managed the BMP Grant (30.000 from Grunenthal in 2023 would go directly into the grant), paying out the grant winners sums of money every year, we have been having a plus year (for example 2022) and a loss year (for example 2023). This will be amended from 2024 on because the pain grant will be relaunched and all management will be done from PAE, while making sure there will always be a % of the grant that will be going directly to support core activities. This way it will balance out our positive and negative results every other year.

In partnership with the European Pain Federation (EFIC) in the Societal Impact of Pain Platform (SIP) we hold events which also launch our position papers in response to EU policy that involves the societal impact of pain including Comprehensive approach to Mental Health, EU Health Data Space Plan, Healthy Workplaces, the Beating Cancer Plan.

On 10 October 2023, World Mental Health Day, SIP hosted the 'Pain and Mental Health: A Societal Impact of Pain (SIP) Event' at the European Parliament. We launched our Joint Statement on Pain and Mental Health.
Invited MEPs, and experts shared their insights at a panel discussion on the close relationship between pain and mental health, the quality of and access to safe pain management, the link between pain, mental health and employment, and how these aspects can be integrated into mental health policies.

In May 2023 Psychedelic Access and Research European Alliance (PAREA) formed a Members of the European Parliament Action Group for the Medical Use of Psychedelics (MEP AG). PAE is a founding member. On November 6th 2023 PAREA held an event in the Parliament titled 'Innovating mental Health in the EU Pharma Legislation: Regulatory Pathways for Psychedelic Therapies' to launch the policy paper: “Unmet Medical Needs: Aligning Medical Innovation with Societal Health Needs”.

The list below only covers meetings held since November 2014 with commissioners, their cabinet members or directors-general at the European Commission; other lobby meetings with lower-level staff may have taken place, but the European Commission doesn't proactively publish information about these meetings. For more information about which commissioner is responsible for which portfolio, check out this link: https://commissioners.ec.europa.eu/index_en All information below comes from European Commission web pages.

1 July 2024: We have noted that some meetings are appearing in duplicate, ie. some meetings seem to be listed twice. This seems to be because the Commission changes some element of a meeting data after the meeting has first been listed, which causes LobbyFacts to register it as a new meeting. We are investigating further.
