Goals / Remit
The Choices Programme is a multi-stakeholder initiative designed to help consumers to easily select healthy food options while encouraging industry to improve their products. It was constituted in The Netherlands in 2006 as a response to the World Health Organisation’s call for food industry to take an active role in helping to tackle the growing problem of obesity and diet-related diseases around the world.
In order to identify the healthiest option in each food category, the Choices Programme consists of a nutrient profile model with product group-specific criteria. These criteria-based on international dietary guidelines-are established and periodically reviewed by an independent International Scientific Committee. They take into account a product’s level of saturated and trans-fatty acids, added sugar, salt and dietary fibre.
The Choices Programme focuses on three points of action to promote healthy choices:
1. Implement front-of-pack labelling: facilitate the use of the Choices logo or comparable positive front-of-pack labels to help consumers identify the healthy choice at a glance.
2. Stimulate (re)formulation of products and portfolios: improvements by individual companies with or without logo use.
3. Encourage healthy product promotion: use of the criteria to shape product offerings and communicate on healthy choices towards consumers.Main EU files targeted

The list below only covers meetings held since November 2014 with commissioners, their cabinet members or directors-general at the European Commission; other lobby meetings with lower-level staff may have taken place, but the European Commission doesn't proactively publish information about these meetings. For more information about which commissioner is responsible for which portfolio, check out this link: https://commissioners.ec.europa.eu/index_en All information below comes from European Commission web pages.
1 July 2024: We have noted that some meetings are appearing in duplicate, ie. some meetings seem to be listed twice. This seems to be because the Commission changes some element of a meeting data after the meeting has first been listed, which causes LobbyFacts to register it as a new meeting. We are investigating further.
