61/295 United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples. The General Assembly, taking note of the recommendation of the Human Rights Council contained in its resolution 1/2 of 29 June 2006, 1 by which the Council adopted the text of the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, Article 4. Indigenous peoples, in exercising the right to self-determination, have the right to autonomy or self-government in matters relating to their internal and local affairs, as well as ways and means for financing their autonomous functions.

The United Nations Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues (UNPFII) is an advisory body to the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), with a mandate to discuss indigenous issues related to economic and social development, culture, the environment, education, helath and human rights.

The Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues was established by the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) in July 2000. It provides expert advice and recommendations on indigenous issues to the UN System through ECOSOC; raises awareness and promotes the integration and coordination of relevant activities within the UN System; and disseminates information on indigenous issues.
