Goals / Remit
The British Council builds connections, understanding and trust between people in the UK and other countries through arts and culture, education and the English language. We are on the ground in more than 100 countries. We work in two ways – directly with individuals to transform their lives, and with governments and partners to make a bigger difference for the longer term, creating benefit for millions of people all over the world. We help young people to gain the skills, confidence and connections they are looking for to realise their potential and to participate in strong and inclusive communities. We support them to learn English, to get a high-quality education and to gain internationally recognised qualifications. Our work in arts and culture stimulates creative expression and exchange and nurtures creative enterprise.

We are interested in EU legislative proposals/policies in creative economy, culture and development, cultural diplomacy, youth employment, youth resilience, gender equality, schools and higher education, VET, and non-formal education, External Relations

The British Council heads a corporate group structure which includes subsidiary undertakings in the UK and overseas. These have been established, for reasons of legal and tax compliance, to further the British Council’s charitable objects and to generate income for use by the charity. The names of the subsidiary entities in the group are provided at the https://www.britishcouncil.org/sites/default/files/british_council_group_operational_entities_oct23.pdf

The British Council has signed Delegation and Contribution agreements with EU Delegations and EC headquarters. These grants are "activity" grants and not operating grants. In partnership with Ecorys UK, the British Council represented the UK National Agency for Erasmus Plus from 2014-2020. The amounts received for Erasmus Plus were for grant disbursement and specific activities under the Erasmus scheme and didn't contribute towards our general operating costs.

The list below covers meetings with Commissioners/Cabinet members/Directors-general (high-level) Commission meetings published December 2014 to December 2024, and the meetings of Commissioners/Cabinet members/Directors-general and officials holding "management functions" in the Commission published since 1 January 2025. Other lobby meetings with lower-level staff may well have taken place, but the Commission doesn't proactively publish information about these meetings. All information below comes from the Commission and not from the registrant.
1 July 2024: We have noted that some meetings are appearing in duplicate, ie. some meetings seem to be listed twice. This seems to be because the Commission changes some element of a meeting data after the meeting has first been listed, which causes LobbyFacts to register it as a new meeting. We are investigating further.
