    Goals / Remit

The Department of Epidemiology (DEP) in Rome is a 30 year old institution within the National Health Service of the Lazio Region. The mission of the Department is to perform high quality epidemiological research in the field of environmental epidemiology, comparative effectiveness, and outcome research. The aim is to provide the best available evidence to inform public health policy makers in order to reduce the effects of environmental exposures and improve health care quality. Partnerships with clinicians and regional or national institutions are necessary components of our activity together with the development of educational programmes in epidemiology.

The two main fields of research within the DEP are:

    Environmental and occupational epidemiology
    Comparative effectiveness and outcome research
Cross-sectional activities carried out in all research areas include:

    Other activities

The DEP has always been engaged in the study of the effects on health of air pollution and pollution caused by traffic, through the use of time series studies and the development of new methodologies.

In particular, the DEP is involved in the development of a system for monitoring environmental characteristics (individual pollutants and meteorological data) and in the production of guidelines for the interpretation of scientific research on air pollution.

The DEP has conducted epidemiological studies on the effects of aircraft noise on the health of the adult population living in the municipalities of Ciampino and Marino: the studies SERA (Study on the Impact of Airport Noise) and SAMBA (Health, Environment, Children).

In terms of public health, the DEP is in charge of the national project "National Program for the Prevention of Heat-health effects" funded by the Ministry of Health and the Department of Civil Protection and has an ongoing collaboration with the WHO and the Ministry of Health for the definition of guidelines for the prevention of health effects due to heat waves.
The regional laws DGR n. 438/ 18.07.2006 and DGR n. 177/ 27.03.2009 have established the C.O.R. (Regional Operative Centre) of the Lazio Region at the Department of Epidemiology of the Regional Health Service - ASL Rome E for the management of the Regional Register of malignant mesothelioma (MM).
Knowledge of the state of health of the population is essential for health care planning, for the definition of prevention programs and for evaluating the effectiveness and quality of health care interventions. The cause-specific mortality is an important indicator for the health of the population, and the Denominative Registry of Causes of Death (ReNCaM), coordinated by the DEP and active since 1987, is the source of data for analysis aiming at highlighting geographical and temporal differences in cause-specific mortality in the population.
