    Goals / Remit

    ICOM is the international organisation of museums and museum professionals which is committed to the research, conservation, continuation and communication to society of the world's natural and cultural heritage, present and future, tangible and intangible. ICOM establishes professional and ethical standards for museum activities, makes recommendations on issues related thereto, promotes capacity building, advances knowledge and raises public cultural awareness through global networks and co-operation programmes.

    ICOM assists its global network - composed of museums and museums professionals - in the implementation of the European legislation and programs, particularly emphasizing on the latest cultural policies and bearing in mind the global objectives of the European Agenda for Culture. Since 2019 ICOM is a member of the EU's informal expert group Commission for the "Cultural Heritage Forum”.

    For the last 6 years ICOM carried out several international projects:
    EU-LAC-MUSEUMS project (2016-2020): funded by the European Union's Horizon2020 research and innovation programme. ICOM International Observatory on Illicit Traffic in Cultural Goods (2013-2015): financed by the Prevention of and Fight against Crime Programme of the European Commission’s Directorate-General Home Affairs.
    Intangible Cultural Heritage & Museums Project (2017-2020): co-funded by the Creative Europe program of the European Union.
