    Regarding European Commission Standing Committee on Plants, Animals, Food and Feed Section Animal Nutrition 10 - 12 February 2020

    Red Seaweed meal (Asparagopsis): is listed as registered under the Feed Materials Register. FutureFeed seek to support EU companies who grow and supply Asparagopsis to livestock producers. Our peer reviewed published Scientific Dossier will support the ingredient use and assure listing on the EU Feed Catalogue.

    Currently the EU committee is reviewing the ingredient, below latest published correspondence.

    A.06.03. Placing of the Asparagopsis taxiformis meal as feed material on the market The Commission's representative recalled from earlier discussions in the Committee that red seaweed meal of the Asparagopsis spp. was considered to be covered by entry 7.1.6 in the EU feed material Catalogue. However, a specific entry for this algae species might be envisaged in the next revision of Regulation 68/2013. Like other aquatic feed materials, this algae meal has naturally considerable levels of bromine and iodine. When incorporating red seaweed meal into the animal’s diets, the feed business operators should take into account its evident contribution to the supply with these elements. Considering the concerns about high contents of bromine or iodine, but also other constituents naturally present in aquatic feed materials, the Commission might envisage an assessment to be done by EFSA.

    As regards a potential claim “reduction of methane emissions” of ruminants, the Commission's representative referred to Article 13 of Regulation 767/2009 validating product claims. When verifying the scientific substantiation of such claims, the competent authorities should especially consider the inclusion rate of the seaweed linked to the claimed methane reduction and check that the feed intake and milk yield are not significantly impaired.

    In regards to the “reduction of methane emissions” claim, FutureFeed certified trade mark standard rules will authenticate the claims around methane reduction FutureFeed will file the standards with appropriate EU regulatory bodies and seek to communication with EU Council on agreed carbon product claims aligned to the EU environmental marketing and labelling claims or equivalent standards to ensure EU consumers are protected with an ISO Certified Standard that meet EU requirements.
    The FutureFeed Standard;
    The objective of the standard is to provide the traceability processes to manage compliance to FutureFeeds Standard including carbon accounting authentication across the value chain while providing a privacy shield for operators. Certified standard managed by an EU ISO accredited certification body.
    2. Operator applications.
    3. Certified operator’s compliance to standard and recordkeeping requirements.
    4. LCA impact measurements across the production system to calculate carbon emissions.
    5. Certified operators’ compliance to product label claims and use of TM, and operators’ formulation approval.
    6. Certified carbon accounting systems for calculating GHG emissions.
    7. Carbon certificates for marketplace to offset/mint and or trade on platforms
    9. Meet Gold Standards requirements
    8. Scheduled third-party audits, audit documentation management.
    9. Issue Non-compliances.
    10. Issue operator certificates/decertify operators not compliant.
    11. Data privacy eco-system network and privacy shield data system to GDPR and other data protection standards globally.
