    Goals / Remit

TheTreeMap is a technology and consultancy company composed of environmental and climate change scientists, remote sensing experts, mapping specialists, software engineers and field investigators. We work to protect tropical forests. We believe that transparency is key to forest protection and sustainable use. Our focus is currently on insular South East Asia.

We develop intuitive scientifically proven maps, analyses, models and tracking platforms with satellites, cloud computing, field investigations and governance data so that anyone can monitor and predict deforestation and fires caused by the expansion of palm oil, rubber, acacia and other plantations and identify those responsible. All our analyses are published in peer-reviewed publications.

Our scientific analyses support environmental NGOs and campaigning groups, academics and governments verify the activities of agribusiness, helps indigenous forest communities protect their ancestral lands by putting their bounda (...)

    Main EU files targeted

We seek to help the EU minimize its contribution to deforestation and forest degradation worldwide and promote the consumption of products from deforestation-free supply chains in the EU.

    - EU 2030 Biodiversity Strategy
    - EU Farm to Fork Strategy
    - EU trade agreements with producer nations which export high risk commodities linked to large-scale deforestation such as Cote d’Ivoire and Ghana and Cameroon (cocoa), Indonesia and Malaysia (palm oil), countries in the Mekong (deforestation for rubber)
    - EU Study "The impact of EU consumption on deforestation"
    - EU Communication on Stepping up EU Action to Protect and Restore the World’s Forests.
    - Access to Justice in Environmental matters

He is a remote sensing specialist, and environmental scientist interested in the intersection of spatial-temporal data, the environment, the climate, economics and policy. He specializes in the use of satellites and field investigations to expose the human footprint on Earth’s land surface. He examines the impacts of fires, agricultural expansion, infrastructure developments on tropical forests and links with corporate sectors.
He has published >60 peer-reviewed scientific articles (h-index=36; 5,581 citations in Google Scholar). He has a mix of field experience, research networks and collaborative partnerships with local, regional and international NGOs and universities in Southeast Asia, the US and in Europe. David has a PhD from the University of Kent, and an MSc from Imperial College London. He is a member of the IUCN Oil Palm task Force.

    ADRIA DESCALS
Adrià is a remote sensing specialist with experience in machine learning. His knowledge about statistics and skills in language programming has been valuable for designing efficient algorithms in various remote sensing applications. Adrià is also proficient in big data processing and planetary-scale analysis. He has worked as a research consultant for several institutions such as the Joint Research Center (JRC) and University of Cambridge. Recent projects in which he has been involved include the mapping of oil palm plantations at the global scale.

    AGUS SALIM
Agus is a Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and remote sensing specialist, and webGIS developer. He specializes in image processing and machine learning. He has progamming skills in Javascript and Python. Agus worked as a GIS officer at the Center for International Forestry Center, and as a consultant for several institutions, including the World Bank in Indonesia and Indonesia's Geospatial Information Agency (Badan Informasi Geospasial, formerly known as Bakosurtanal) in GIS, spatial database management and web mapping development projects. He earned a BA in geodetic engineering from Indonesia's Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB) in 2002.

    Communication activities

We are the creators of the Borneo and Papua Atlas: https://atlas.cifor.org/.The Atlas provided input into the negotiations of the Indonesian government with the European Commission on the EU's proposed ban on palm oil.

This geo-platform offers the first opportunity to verify planting activities and associated deforestation of > 200 oil palm companies and their subsidiaries (also pulp&paper) over two decades on the islands of Borneo and New Guinea. We are currently extending to the whole of Indonesia and Malaysia.

The Atlas creates the clearest picture of the relationship between deforestation and the development of industrial oil palm and pulpwood plantations by measuring the expansion of plantations and associated deforestation in concessions and near mills annually over two decades. The Atlas also tracks tree loss in near-real time (weekly) to allow for rapid identification of who might be responsible as it happens. The atlas also provides the most comprehensive maps of concession boundaries, land ownership, and mills locations. It brings this information at users’ fingertips via impactful time-lapse animations and a dynamic graphical user interface and provides an easy way to re-order companies and subsidiaries from worst to least forest destroyer in tabular format.
Users can track the actions of companies over time, and check whether they are clearing new areas of forest to establish plantations, or planting on land that has already been deforested for other reasons. That makes it a powerful tool for keeping an eye on company activities, and how they measure up to what they say in their reports.

The Atlas is an open platform for companies, governments, researchers, advocacy groups, journalists and anyone interested in deforestation and in tracking corporate actions. It is currently used to carry out planting permit reviews, concession monitoring, environmental impact assessments, conservation planning. It gives everyone the opportunity to review the evidence for themselves and think about the potential impacts of their consumption habits on the rainforests of Southeast Asia.
