    Goals / Remit

LIFE’s Vision is of a European Union with healthy seas, where small-scale fishers are masters of their future, custodians of the sea, are economically independent, contributing to prosperous coastal communities and the environmental sustainability of the Oceans.

LIFE’s Mission is to unite European small-scale fishers to achieve fair fisheries, healthy seas and vibrant communities.

LIFE aims to unite and energise small-scale artisanal fishers as key agents of environmental and social change, ensure strong and effective representation, and give a voice and support to their associations at local, regional and European level.

We are convinced that, given policy space and appropriate support, small-scale fisheries could be part of the solution and a gamechanger to Europe’s ailing seas and could make a vital contribution to implementing the Green Deal agenda for 2030 and 2050, in line with the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the SDGs.

    Communication activities

LIFE's current activities are centred around influencing the implementation of the reformed Common Fisheries Policy. We do this through significant and ongoing interaction with the member organisations from UK, Netherlands, Poland, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Spain, France, Italy, Sweden, Cyprus and Croatia. On the basis of information and advice received in this way we generate policy views and transit them to the Commission [DG MARE], MEP's and Member States. LIFE has already had a number of successful meetings with these elements that have provided a much clearer understanding of the sector and the benefits it provides to often remote and vulnerable coastal communities.
We undertake events such as conferences and more local meetings in member states in support of our organisations therein, assist them in capacity building and work closely with them in regard to their relationships with regional and national governments.
Internet: https://lifeplatform.eu/; we have a Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/pages/Low-Impact-Fishers-of-Europe/166393173503352?ref=hl but at present we are focusing more on practical requirements rather than social media; also LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/10235827/admin/
We attend meetings and conferences where we are able to promote the benefits of small scale, low impact fishing.
In partnership with our member organisations across Europe, we are encouraging other smaller scale fishing organisations to join us. We have a number of organisations interested in joining LIFE that will assist greatly in providing added credibility to our aims and ambitions on behalf of our sector.

The list below only covers meetings held since November 2014 with commissioners, their cabinet members or directors-general at the European Commission; other lobby meetings with lower-level staff may have taken place, but the European Commission doesn't proactively publish information about these meetings. For more information about which commissioner is responsible for which portfolio, check out this link: https://commissioners.ec.europa.eu/index_en All information below comes from European Commission web pages.

1 July 2024: We have noted that some meetings are appearing in duplicate, ie. some meetings seem to be listed twice. This seems to be because the Commission changes some element of a meeting data after the meeting has first been listed, which causes LobbyFacts to register it as a new meeting. We are investigating further.
