    EU Transparency Register

    Goals / Remit

EJF works globally to inform policy and drive reforms to protect our environment and defend human rights. We investigate and expose environmental and human rights abuses and support environmental defenders, Indigenous peoples, communities and independent journalists on the frontlines of environmental injustice. Our campaigns aim to secure peaceful, equitable and sustainable futures. EJF works to:
-Protect ocean ecosystems, biodiversity and human rights by combating illegal and unsustainable fishing, ending harmful fisheries subsidies, stopping deep-sea mining and marine pollution, and ensuring effective marine protected areas.
-Ensure climate justice for vulnerable communities and act to avoid climate breakdown, including by preserving natural carbon sinks.
-Reduce the impact of global supply chains on the environment and human rights.
-Create stronger governance and transparency to protect our planet.
-Provide support to environmental defenders, sharing their message through film.

    Main EU files targeted

EJF covers many EU policy areas, including working to:
    - End unsustainable and illegal fishing; including working to support a harmonised and effective implementation of the Regulation on illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing (IUU Regulation). This includes work on other EU Regulations and instruments that are directly relevant to the effective implementation of the IUU Regulation, in particular the Regulation on the Sustainable Management of the external fleet, the Fisheries Control Regulation, and sustainable fisheries partnership agreements.
    - Ensure EU's ambitious proposals on fisheries governance and transparency, and to ensure advancing similar legislation in relevant international fora, such as GFCM.
Improve transparency in fisheries; for example, working to improve transparency of beneficial ownership of vessels.
    - Protect our oceans and conserve marine biodiversity; for example, on the effective execution of the “EU Action Plan: Protecting and restoring marine ecosystems for sustainable and resilient fisheries”, the implementation of the Habitats and Birds Directives, the 2030 EU Biodiversity Strategy, and working to stop deep-sea mining.
    - Ensure the EU has effective mandatory human rights and environmental due diligence legislation; including a strong Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive and Forced Labour Regulation and that EU bodies and Member States robustly implement and enforce these laws.
    - Combat the climate crisis, with a strong emphasis on climate justice and promoting the use of nature-based solutions for mitigating and adapting to climate change (such as protection of wetlands); for example, working on the Regulation on Deforestation-free products.
    - Implement two separate projects in Ghana and Liberia with funding from EuropeAid, complementing the EU's commitment to the SDG's.

    Communication activities

    - EJF uses video, along with new technologies, to document threats to environmental security and human rights. Producing hard-hitting reports and investigations, we target decision-makers and work to change laws and policies with a positive impact on people and the planet.
    - EJF is working with the European Commission to share evidence of IUU fishing in high-risk areas such as West Africa and South-East Asia to inform and support dialogues with third countries.
    - EJF is in routine and regular contact with representatives from Member States in Brussels and MEPs to present evidence from our investigations and grassroots partnerships in order to raise awareness on problems in the fisheries sector, particularly regarding IUU fishing in Africa and South-East Asia.
    - EJF is a member of several coalitions of NGOs. As part of this coalition work, we maintain close contact with relevant MEPs and organise events in the European Parliament to share our recommendations.
    - EJF is in contact with the European Commission and MEPs to raise awareness for the need for action and share our recommendations on our policy areas.

    Meetings

    16 meetings found. Download meetings

The list below only covers meetings held since November 2014 with commissioners, their cabinet members or directors-general at the European Commission; other lobby meetings with lower-level staff may have taken place, but the European Commission doesn't proactively publish information about these meetings. For more information about which commissioner is responsible for which portfolio, check out this link: https://commissioners.ec.europa.eu/index_en All information below comes from European Commission web pages.

1 July 2024: We have noted that some meetings are appearing in duplicate, ie. some meetings seem to be listed twice. This seems to be because the Commission changes some element of a meeting data after the meeting has first been listed, which causes LobbyFacts to register it as a new meeting. We are investigating further.
